DAM Advice:

Work hard and play hard! Be open to opportunities and experiences that may come your way. Stay creative. Keep your portfolio up to date, an online presence is helpful. Do freelance work and get some experience if you don’t get to do a placement year. Even create projects for yourself. Make sure you are doing what you love, whether it’s 3D, graphics, typography or whatever!

DAM Memory:

There are so many memories which are too hard to choose from. Loved my time at DAM. Especially placement year and final year where I really grew as a designer. Loved creating my own brief and doing my final project where I could just have lots fun before moving on to work for clients again!I had a great group of friends in DAM (friends for life  ) & the lecturers are always there to help and support you, even after you graduate!

 DAM Advice:

Keep an open mind. Try new things. Experiment as much as possible to find what you love, then go towards that. Take full advantage of the erasmus/isep program. Remember it’s not work, its design, so have fun.

DAM Memory:

Many fond memories of extracurricular activities with the gang. Creative juices flowing freely, free thinking in a encouraging environment. Working with a great group of people and creating something we all can be collectively proud of. Top that off with a celebratory beer and you’re onto a win. That’s how I remember it.

Chances are I’ve worked on every yogurt, custard and porridge pot going. I still get excited to see them on the shelves!

DAM Advice:

Anyone who knows me will find this laughable but, believe in your own capabilities. Don’t be too hard on yourself. Take your time to truly love what you do, let others inspire you but don’t compare yourself. You will have off days and that’s ok. Go for a walk, belt out your fave tunes, have a cuppa, cry to a friend, get it out of your system and try again.

DAM Memory:

This is a tough ask because there are so many! Rather than pick a specific memory I would like to acknowledge the people; the most amazing, creative, inspiring, absolutely bonkers, genuine people I’ve had the pleasure to call friends! They played a huge part in the good & helped me through the bad. They made my time at Magee unforgettable!

DAM Memory:

Every night out with the #designatmagee crew was good banter, seeing Gosh perform in the Drift Inn being a highlight. Oh and going to Ballyshannon to work on the ‘Walk with Allingham’ film and messing with the jib on the beach. Good times!

DAM Advice:

Utilise the social networks to promote your work.  If no one can see your work then what is the point in creating it in the first place.Every new graduate needs to understand that Design should be your obsession and passion. Every minute of everydaythink of new projects, ideas and new ways of creating content. Love design unconditionally because design certainly will not love you back.

DAM Memory:

Showcasing my poster Dead Leaf to the public for the first time at the End of Year show 2008 was a great feeling for me.  That one poster was a process of 6 frustrating months of investigation, sketching and rethinking so it was a relief to finally get to show it to the world.

DAM Advice:

In order to get where you want to be after graduation you will have to set yourself apart from the competition, work hard and constantly develop yourself as much as possible.  Having a degree is a great achievement but you will have to find out what you really love about design and build on that. Creativity is the key.

DAM Memory:

So many great memories of DAM, it really gave me a better understanding of what it takes as a designer. But one particular memory was the 48 hour “Type You Wear” project…lots of coffee was the trick to success!

DAM Advice:

Stay calm, don’t stress! Everything will work out fine. Let your mind run free, experiment to the last and do something design related every single day to keep your mind active. Submit all work even if you think it’s not good enough or you don’t like it, what you see in your work is not the same as what other people see in it. Trust and believe in yourself.

DAM Memory:

Have lots of great memories, but really enjoyed exhibiting my work in The London Street Gallery at the end of year show. Its a great feeling when total random strangers are appreciating your hard work and you overhear them discussing your project. It was a real good feeling plus we all went drinking afterwards for one last blow out and had great craic!

Be nice and make plenty of contacts, you don’t know where your next opportunity will spring from.

DAM MemoryCompleting the product design module, absolutely loving 3D as a medium and then being told to have a look at 3DsMax as I left the building for the summer holidays, I never looked back. One of the massive benefits of the course was the multitude of disciplines you were immersed in. I joined thinking I was going to pretty much come out the other end as a graphic designer and it offered me another world in 3D I could not imagine a life without.

DAM Advice: This isn’t just a university course; this will become your life. Be full of passion and take pride in the work you do. Believe in your own ability because presenting your ideas and your work is a lot easier when you believe in what you’re saying.

This is a great opportunity to do work for you. Client-driven work is fun but nothing compares to working without constraints on something that you’re calling the shots.

Oh, and always remember to kern.

DAM Memory:

Studying in Weimar was a definite highlight for me. Living in another country and experiencing different cultures helped me grow as a person while studying ‘the Bauhaus way’ really improved me as a designer. I learned invaluable skills in designing for print and handcrafting books; skills that not only got me through final year but also made me stand out as a graduate looking for jobs.

Another highlight was final year. It was tough and the nights were long but the sense of accomplishment at the end was hard to beat.

DAM Advice: Never say no, go for each opportunity that is presented to you and try to make the most of every situation! Each new experience helps you decide what and where you want to go so use it to your advantage and make some nice memories at the same time.

DAM Memory: Working and playing with a bunch of awesome people, be it the staff or my classmates. Can’t imagine having a better time elsewhere. Getting the opportunity to work in TV and Film abroad was the greatest highlight and experience for myself but I wouldn’t have got here without everyone at #DesignAtMagee.

DAM Advice: Make sure your goals are balanced, ambitious but realistic. Don’t fear criticism, grow from it. Experiment with design in different mediums, I hated 3Ds Max at first. Go for a placement if given the chance, you’ll come back experienced and prepared for final year. If you aren’t truly enjoying your project, it’s not worth it. Find what you love, develop your skills, and do it to death. When you think you’ve done enough, do that little bit more. And then some.

DAM Memory16GB DDR3. The entire DesignAtMagee experience is something I’ll always remember. I’ll always be grateful for the professionalism of the lecturers, the incredible employment opportunities both locally and internationally, and the freedom to create what I want, how I want. Above all, have fun and believe in your work.
